Sheriff Paden said that after a thorough investigation by his Investigation Division, the injuries sustained to a 6 month old infant are believed to be accidental in nature. Sheriff Paden said that deputies responded to Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center emergency department shortly after 2:00 a.m. Wednesday morning (February 24th) after medical staff, as mandated reporters by Ohio Law, advised that they were treating a 6 month old infant from Byesville, for trauma to the baby’s head. Deputies arrived at the hospital and spoke with the mother of the child and her boyfriend, just prior to the infant being transferred to Nationwide Children’s Hospital by helicopter. At that time the investigation was assigned to the Investigation Division.
Over the next 48 hours investigators conducted interviews, reviewed medical records, worked with medical personnel from Nationwide Children’s Hospital and case workers from Guernsey County Children Services as well as consultations with the Prosecutor’s Office. Sheriff Paden said that based on the results of the investigation and after conferring with neurologist’s from Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Guernsey County Prosecutor’s Office, no criminal charges will be filed in this case.
