The Investigations Division of the Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation in regards to an email that was received by an official of the East Guernsey Local School District on September 22nd, 2021. Throughout this complex investigation detectives were able to determine that the emails were originally sent from a residence located in California. Detectives Brian Carpenter and Aaron Coulter travelled to California and with the assistance of local authorities a search warrant was executed where electronic evidence was seized. Detectives spoke with a male juvenile at the residence and a confession was obtained. Detectives were then able to corroborate the confession through the processing of digital evidence. Detectives learned that a local male juvenile from the East Guernsey Local School district conspired with the California juvenile to orchestrate the emails. On October 18th, 2021 Detectives spoke with the local juvenile and obtained a subsequent confession and seized further digital evidence.
Investigators will meet with the Prosecutors Office to review the case and determine applicable felony charges against both juveniles. School officials have been provided an update to the case and they have initiated internal actions against the local male student.
Sheriff Jeffery Paden praised his detectives for their swift and thoroughness to bring this case to a successful conclusion. Sheriff Paden wishes to thank the East Guernsey School District officials, Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Intelligence Unit, Homeland Security Investigations, as well as the officers with the Huron Police Department for their assistance in this investigation.
