Major Jeremy Wilkinson was traveling on Southgate Pkwy just north of the Guernsey County Justice Center shortly before 4:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon when he observed a vehicle pulled off alongside the roadway. Major Wilkinson approached the vehicle to determine what the issue was with the motorist. As he approached the vehicle The Major found an elderly male driver unresponsive with his foot on the brake, the vehicle still in drive and the doors locked. He summoned United Ambulance and went to the passenger side of the vehicle and began striking the window with a sledge hammer. At this time other deputies began arriving to assist as well as a female citizen. The driver was pulled from the vehicle and the citizen began performing CPR on the man. She was assisted in those efforts by Major Wilkinson and Deputy Jon Simmerman. A short time later medics from United Ambulance arrived on scene and began assisting as well. The man was transported to Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center and was later transferred to Riverside Hospital in Columbus.
